Getting here and around

Trains and buses here have their own rules: changes, buses instead of trains, runs that switch because of engineering works. We explain them journey by journey, with today's times.

By air

Two airports, each about an hour's drive away.

Bari airport≈1 h

The most convenient: about 70 km, an hour's drive. By public transport: train to Bari Centrale, then FSE with a change at Putignano, about 2.5 hours (see below).

Brindisi airport≈1 h 10

About 1 hour 10 minutes by car. By public transport you need several changes, so renting a car or booking a transfer makes sense.

Trains and buses: how it works

Alberobello is on the Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE) line between Putignano and Martina Franca. What to know before you travel.

For Bari you have to change

There's no direct train from Alberobello to Bari: you travel to Putignano and change there. The first leg is often a bus, weekdays included, because of works on the line. Allow about 2 hours in total. FSE is part of the Italian State Railways group: timetables and tickets are also on the Trenitalia app and website.

Train or bus? Check the label

On the Alberobello stretch, trains (when the line is open) run Monday to Saturday only. On Sundays, public holidays and during engineering works FSE runs buses, leaving from the stop outside the station in Piazza Kennedy. In timetables, BUS means a bus.

Check on the day

Times and vehicles change often. The quickest way: the "Today's times" button on each journey below, which opens Google Maps with today's public transport. Then FSE's live status. If you have a paper ticket, validate it before boarding.

From the station to the trulli

The station is in town: the centre is about a ten-minute walk.

From Alberobello to…

The journeys visitors ask about most, step by step.

Bari city≈2 h

FSE train or bus to Putignano, then train to Bari Centrale. About 2 hours. By car it's just over an hour.

Bari airport≈2 h 30

As for Bari as far as Bari Centrale, then the airport train (Ferrovie del Nord Barese): about 20 minutes, several departures an hour. With luggage or early flights a transfer is easier.

Locorotondo and Martina Franca≈15 min

They're on the same FSE line, towards Martina Franca: no changes. As with Bari, the service is sometimes by bus.

Monopoli and Polignano a Mare≈50 min

There are only a few FSE buses a day to Monopoli, about 50 minutes: check the timetable. From Monopoli to Polignano the regional train takes a few minutes.

Matera≈1 h 15

No direct connection: by public transport it takes several changes and over three hours. By car it's an hour and a quarter, or take an organised trip.

Brindisi airport and Ostuni≈1 h 10

By public transport these are long trips with several changes: a car or a pre-booked transfer is better.

Getting around

On foot in town, by car for the surroundings.

On foot

Rione Monti, Aia Piccola and the main square are a few minutes apart. The trulli lanes are uphill and paved with stone: wear comfortable shoes.

By car

For Locorotondo, Martina Franca, the caves and the coast a car is the practical choice: public transport between towns is limited.

Taxis and transfers

There are few taxis in town and they must be called: for airports and stations, book a transfer before you travel.

By bike

The countryside between Alberobello and Locorotondo is lovely by e-bike, past dry-stone walls and scattered trulli.
